JD DeHart… Ragged Moth

Ragged Moth

While we move and shuffle,
the moth watches from the wall.
Mold comes bleeding through
in patches.
This is the last time we will see
this place and we know it,
the last time we will say these
words in this place.
Our surroundings echo back to
us and remind us to move slowly
so that we can remember this.
Like gorging too quickly, our
escape from this place will only
exist in our minds if we taste
and take our time.

Dane Cobain… Everything’s Cancer

Everything’s Cancer

The smell of cigarette smoke
on hazy summer days
when you pray for rain
and feel the same sense of shame
when your friends,
who cannot be named,
share racist statements

on Facebook pages.

Meanwhile,
beautiful girls turn ugly
by dyeing their hair and skin
and wearing too much make-up,
and who can blame ‘em?
There’s a lot of pressure
to look your best,
and a set of conventions
to attend to,
but intelligence turns me on
and ambition in a woman,
coupled with talent,

has gotta be the best combination.

Look,
it’s simple –
you look the way you look,
so you’d better get comfortable

with discomfort.

If it makes you cry,
you’ve gotta ask yourself,
is this happiness
or sadness?

only drops of rain.

B.Z. Niditch… A New World

A New World

Those wild strawberries
in our cool hand
which keep us in sweetness
on day’s long airy days
we hike on Concord trails
ablaze the meadow flowers
in well-worn denims
through kicking a ball
by cypress
catching my breath
over tall grass shade
against the west wind
of swarming hum of bees
by Walden Pond
reading to a circle of students
overcoming the pine combs
on common ground
over Indian blankets
of spreading light
all of us in turn
reciting words from Thoreau
everyone responds with perception
among the relentless sunshine
on these dales and hills
as nature reveals
the same language, love, nature
that the songbirds call.

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving.

In Harlan…

Are we supposed to cook?

She was going to Mt. Rushmore-

An empty place at the table

gives thanks

for these Thy many gifts.

In the morning,

Black Friday

Finalizes the funeral plans.
